Received this e-mail today from Charlie Crist's (D. FL) gubernatorial campaign:
Please do share the story and please donate and get involved with Crist's campaign so he can defeat Scott in November:Rick Scott has been caught in an outright lie to Florida voters. If you haven't heard about it, here's what you need to know:Over the last month, the Scott campaign has spent more than $2 million airing a TV ad. You might have seen it -- it's been shown upwards of 4000 times.
Here's the problem: It's completely untrue. Don't ask me -- ask the Miami Herald and the Tampa Bay Times.
http://www.miamiherald.com/...
The ad features an unnamed Republican donor falsely claiming that he was "swindled" by both Charlie and noted Ponzi schemer and convicted felon, Scott Rothstein.
Reporters discovered that the anonymous guy on tape is a multimillionaire investor named Dean Kretschmar, who has close ties to Rick Scott and -- you can't make this stuff up -- to Rothstein, the very same criminal he falsely accuses Charlie of being connected to.
Dean says that Rothstein "swindled a lot of people -- me included -- [and] bankrupted many families."
But Dean never went bankrupt -- not even close. In fact, he made back roughly $8 million that he'd personally given Rothstein. Since the lawsuit ended, Dean founded a new company and still resides in a $2.9 million home.
And to top it off: Dean's lawyer and advocate is William Scherer, a Republican operative (and Scott donor, of course) who was once a "mentor" to Rothstein.
Rick Scott says "the ad speaks for itself." When caught in the lie by reporters, he tried to redefine the word "swindled" in a classic robotic ramble. But the facts are clear. Rick Scott is running an ad that is absolutely not true -- and he refuses to admit it or stop showing it on TV.
His reluctance to tell reporters Dean's background shows that he knew it would be shady -- and he's doubling down by refusing to answer questions about it now that we know the truth.
We can't trust Rick Scott to be honest with us. We can't trust him to do the right thing. And we can't ever trust him to be responsible for his actions.
I'm not asking you for money. I'm not even asking you to volunteer. I'm just asking you to take a minute to think about this story and, if it makes you mad, tell a friend about it.
It's important for Floridians to understand that Rick Scott isn't just stretching the facts. He is literally making things up in a cynical but well-funded campaign to stay in the governor's mansion, all based on the assumption that you don't have the power to stop him.
We're going to prove him wrong. We have to beat him.
More soon,
Omar
