Rep. Bruce Braley's (D-IA) Senate campaign released a new ad Thursday hitting Republican opponent state Sen. Joni Ernst on her sponsorship of a "personhood amendment" during her time in the Iowa state Senate.

The ad hits Ernst for her "radical ideas" in the state Senate. Specifically, the ad focuses on Ernst joining 20 Republicans and one Democrat in 2013 to support the Senate Joint Resolution 10, an amendment, according to the Des Moines Register, that ensured "the inalienable right to life of every person at any stage of development shall be recognized and protected."

The ad comes as a number of top Senate Republican candidates shift their stances away from supporting Personhood legislation to backing easier access to over-the-counter contraception. At a debate last night House Speaker Thom Tillis (R-NC) stressed his support for over the counter contraception. - TPM, 9/4/14

I like it because Braley is not holding back and getting aggressive. Now of course Republicans released their ad hitting Braley on the VA scandal:

The 30-second spot was created by Freedom Partners Action Fund, a campaign group backed by the billionaire political activists Charles and David Koch. It's slated to run on broadcast networks and cable channels throughout September.

The first half of the ad hits Braley, a Democrat, on an issue Republicans have raised repeatedly in recent weeks: his absence from 15 out of 19 meetings of the House Veterans Affairs Committee between 2011 and 2013.

"As a veteran, I was insulted that Braley would be on the Veterans Affairs Committee and miss 79 percent of the meetings," says a man identified as "Jon," a Vietnam-era veteran from Adel. "Veterans risked their lives for our country and Bruce Braley didn't have the respect to show up to support them."

The ad then shifts in tone, as Jon begins talking about Ernst, the Republican in the race, whom he calls "a very true Iowan"

"I'm a proud veteran, I'm a proud Iowan and I'm voting for Joni Ernst," Jon says. - Des Moines Register, 9/4/14

Jesse McCunniff, a Iowa National Guard member from Waterloo, responded to Ernst's ad and defended Braley's work in congress for Veterans:
"The truth is that Bruce Braley has a record of delivering for Iowa veterans, whether fighting for two years to make sure hundreds of Iowa National Guard members promised back pay got the benefits they had earned, or fighting across party lines to improve veterans disability benefits, or passing tax cuts for small businesses to hire veterans," McCunniff said in the statement. "Bruce stood up to the Pentagon bureaucracy and delivered results for Iowa troops who had put their lives on the line."
To me, the latest attack from Ernst is a desperate attempt to get people to not focus on this:

Joni Ernst, the Republican candidate for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat, says Social Security and Medicare are going bankrupt and policymakers should “identify solutions” to fix the problem.

“We have to address the problem,” Ernst said this morning during an appearance at Wesley Acres, a retirement community in Des Moines. “What we can’t do is stick our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist, so we need to find solutions. We need to work together to solve them.”

However, Ernst is ruling out one idea as a solution.

“One thing my opponent has stated is that he would consider raising the age of retirement and, yes, that is an option,” Ernst said. “That is an option that’s out there but that’s not an option that I support.”

Her opponent is Democrat Bruce Braley, who has served in congress since 2007. During his first campaign in 2006 Braley told The Cedar Rapids Gazette raising the retirement age might be necessary. Two months ago The Daily Nonpareil reported that Braley opposes raising the retirement age, and believes eliminating the cap on how much income is subject to Social Security taxes would fix the system’s insolvency problem. - Radio Iowa, 9/3/14

I like that Braley has seen the light since 2006 and is on the expand Social Security bandwagon. With Braley in the Senate, Social Security, Veterans and reproductive rights are in good hands. By the way, Braley snagged this endorsement which could be helpful:

The Iowa Corn Growers Association, one of the state's most influential farm groups, announced Tuesday its political action committee had endorsed Democrat Bruce Braley in his campaign for the U.S. Senate against Republican state Sen. Joni Ernst.

A news release from the Corn Growers Association PAC said the decisions were made by a bipartisan committee of farmer-members who consider candidates based only on their support of ICGA policies. Braley was one of 75 state and federal candidates included in the endorsements, but his race may be the most hotly contested statewide campaign this fall.

The Corn Growers PAC also endorsed Gov. Terry Branstad for re-election and four candidates for the U.S. House, including U.S. Reps. Steve King and Dave Loebsack, and David Young and Pat Murphy.

Candidates are evaluated on priority corn policies such as conservation and water quality funding, the Corn Checkoff, transportation, ethanol, farm bill, taxes, trade and value-added agriculture, including livestock, the Corn Growers PAC said. - Des Moines Register, 9/2/14
