GA-Sen: Nunn (D) Puts The Pressure On Perdue (R) & Kingston (R) To Sign The Peach State Pledge

Received this e-mail today from Michelle Nunn's (D. GA) U.S. Senate campaign:

If you're tired of negative campaigns run by Super PACs with no one standing behind their claims or willing to put their name behind their ads, then we need your voice today.

Just yesterday, Michelle called on her potential opponents, Rep. Jack Kingston and David Perdue, to join her in an agreement to refuse third party ads.

Join our calls on Rep. Jack Kingston and David Perdue to sign our Peach State Pledge and SAY NO to Super PACs and special interests trying to buy this election.

In Michelle's letter to her opponents she outlines just why we all feel so strongly that they agree to keep these third party groups out of Georgia. From Michelle:

In many cases, these groups will never be forced to disclose who is backing them -- preventing Georgians from seeing who is trying to influence our election. And unlike television advertisements from each of our campaigns -- where by virtue of a clear disclaimer voters know who to hold accountable for the message -- that is not the case with third party advertisements.

I believe we have an opportunity to send a message to Washington.  If we can join together and pledge to limit outside spending and third party ads, we can together show that the people of our state are tired of politics as usual.  That message isn't exclusively a Democratic message or a Republican message, it's just common sense.

Derrick Dickey, press secretary for Perdue, said the pledge is an “empty” call to action.

“This is yet another example of Michelle Nunn’s empty rhetoric,” he said. “I doubt she has told President Obama, Harry Reid, or her friends in Washington to spend their money elsewhere.”

Kingston spokesman Chris Crawford said Kingston also would not support the pledge.

“This is the height of hypocrisy from someone whose campaign is almost wholly funded from out-of-state liberals, the Washington Democrat machine, and special-interest groups like the pro-abortion EMILY’s List,” he said. - Online Athens, 7/9/14

EMILY's List has not put up any ads in support of Nunn's campaign.  But keep the pressure on Kingston and Perdue is a winning strategy because it highlights how both GOP candidates fully support Super PAC cash and outside money.  So lets keep up the pressure:

She said Perdue can’t win against Nunn, the Democratic candidate.

“We all saw what happened to Mitt Romney,” she said. “Well, the Democrats, what they did to Mitt Romney, it’s going to look like child’s play when they get finished with David Perdue.”

Perdue is a wealthy business executive and political newcomer. His campaign rebuffed any notion that Kingston is the answer to the problems in Washington.

“David is the strongest candidate to take on Michelle Nunn in November because he has not been part of the dysfunction that created the mess in Washington,” said the campaign’s Derrick Dickey. “Voters understand that you can't send an out of touch 22-year congressman back to Washington and expect him to fix the problems he helped create.”

Perdue had the most votes in the primary, but most prominent Republicans and GOP-leaning organizations have lined up behind Congressman Kingston, including the U.S. Chamber.

Chris Walker lives in St. Mary’s, which is part of Kingston’s current district. He was in Atlanta on vacation and was eating at the Varsity during the Kingston event. He doesn’t buy the idea that anyone can be an outsider in Washington.

“I think once you get there, even if you run as an outsider, you become part of the problem," he said. "I think Jack Kingston will do what the constituents want because that’s what he’s always done.” - GPB News, 7/9/14
