KY-Sen: Magellan Strategies Has Grimes (D) Leading McConnell (R) 49-46

A Magellan Strategies poll released Thursday found Grimes leading McConnell 49 percent to 46 percent in the 2014 race. Five percent of respondents were undecided.

The poll also found that 58 percent of respondents would be more likely to oppose a candidate for U.S. Senate that supports the Obama administration's new carbon emission regulations, which seek to reduce emissions by 30 percent from existing power plants by 2030.

Grimes has distanced herself from the President on coal and released a statement promising to "fiercely oppose" those new carbon emission regulations. She has also made a point of criticizing McConnell for not doing enough to protect Kentucky coal jobs. - TPM, 6/12/14

The poll was conducted June 4-5 using automated interviews among likely general election voters in Kentucky.  It had a margin of error of 3.45 percentage points.  Here's a little more info:

A new survey from GOP pollster Magellan Strategies shows him holding about steady at 60 percent disapproval. But that survey actually has good news for Grimes — it shows her leading McConnell by three points, with 49 percent support among likely voters to McConnell’s 46 percent support.

McConnell’s team has criticized the survey as oversampling Democrats, but the partisan breakdown of the polling sample actually aligns closely with the state’s registered voter breakdown. Fifty-six percent of respondents were Democrats, while 40 percent were Republicans, just two percent more each than the portion of registered voters of each party in the state.

Indeed, that registration advantage is one reason Democrats believe they have a shot at taking down McConnell this fall. Though Obama and his policies are unpopular in Kentucky, by registration it’s more of a purple state, and currently has a Democratic senator and a Democratic state House. - The Hill, 6/12/14

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will travel to Kentucky  this month to campaign for Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democrat trying to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R).

"Our campaign welcomes Senator Warren's support as she champions relief for Kentuckians crushed under the burden of student loan debt,” Grimes campaign manager Jonathan Hurst said in a statement Thursday.

Warren first announced her intention to stump for Grimes in a Wednesday evening appearance on MSNBC.

"I'm going to get out there and try to make this happen for her," the Massachusetts Democrat said. - Washington Post, 6/12/14

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) railed against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Wednesday for failing to support her student loan refinancing proposal, which the Senate killed in a 56-38 vote earlier in the day.

Warren's bill would have enabled millions of Americans to refinance their student loans into cheaper debt by increasing taxes on wealthy households. Following the bill's defeat, Warren told MSNBC that McConnell, who called the proposal a "show vote," has made clear where his allegiance lies.

"Mitch McConnell is there for millionaires and billionaires," Warren said. "He is not there for people who are working hard playing by the rules and trying to build a future for themselves."

"One way I'm going to start fighting back is I'm going to go down to Kentucky and I'm going to campaign for Alison Lundergan Grimes," Warren said. "She's tough, she's feisty, she endorsed the student loan bill, said she wanted to bring down interest rates for Kentuckians. ... So my view is I'm going to get out there and try to make this happen for her."

Following the Senate vote, Grimes released a statement slamming McConnell for his "blatant disregard" for Kentuckians burdened by student loan debt.

Warren said Grimes is just what Washington needs.

"You get Alison Lundergan Grimes in there and I feel like she could almost single-handedly get rid of some of the gridlock here in Washington," Warren said. - Huffington Post, 6/12/14
