Received this e-mail today from the New Mexico chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) regarding Gov. Susana Martinez (R. NM) over recordings of her bashing teachers:
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, a rising star in the Republican Party, was caught red handed bashing our teachers.

In one audio clip posted yesterday, Martinez told campaign staffers that she would hide her opinions on teachers during the campaign. In another, the governor laughs as her chief campaign strategist discussed ways to avoid accusations that she hid her true anti-teacher feelings during the campaign.

Will you stand in solidarity with New Mexico teachers and send Gov. Martinez a message? Bad mouthing our educators is not ok.

I wish the governor's words came as more of a surprise, but they don't. Gov. Martinez has been unabashed in her strategy to attack teachers and dismantle public education in New Mexico. She is taking us down a path of test fixation and deprofessionalization—a path that's ultimately failing our students.

Meanwhile, parents, students, educators and community members in my state are coming together to chart a different course for public education. We are working together to reclaim the promise of a world-class education system by emphasizing and implementing proven solutions, such as providing a high-quality education from birth through career, treating students as individuals, making sure our students have access to emotional and health services in school and early interventions, and ensuring our schools are sufficiently funded.

Gov. Martinez isn't working with New Mexicans to reclaim the promise of public education. Send her a message that bad mouthing educators doesn't fly.

Gov. Martinez's harsh words are a reminder that we have more work to do to make sure every child in New Mexico, and across America, has access to a high-quality education.

In unity,
Stephanie Ly
AFT New Mexico President

P.S. Hear Susana’s graphic attacks on women, Hispanic business and teachers here. I have to warn you, it's pretty bad.
