NH-Sen: Jimmy Fallon Proposes Lazy Campaign Slogans For Scott Brown (R)

Comedian Jimmy Fallon mocked former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) on Tuesday for telling the Associated Press he probably doesn't "have the best credentials" to be exploring a Senate run in neighboring New Hampshire.

Addressing carpetbagging claims in an interview with the AP, Brown said "Do I have the best credentials? Probably not. 'Cause, you know, whatever. But I have long and strong ties to this state."

Fallon came up with a few Scott Brown campaign slogans to fit that nonchalant approach in his "The Tonight Show" monologue.

"I'm Scott Brown. If you have time, vote for me. If not, that's cool. #totescool," Fallon proposed.

The slogans only got lazier from there: "Scott Brown for Senate. Or Whoever. Whatever. Forever," or simply "Hey, sup?" - TPM, 3/26/14

Funny stuff.  But if Brown is serious about trying to unseat Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D. NH), he probably should stop saying "whatever" a lot:

On one hand, Brown's appraisal of his preparation for the job was a dose of candor that we rarely see from politicians. That appeals to some voters, but it could be read as lackadaisical by others. Brown is trying to convince voters he moved from Massachusetts to run in New Hampshire because he cares about the state and knows it well, and "whatever" -- with its teenagy insinuation of indifference --  is part of the conversation?

The Democratic opposition ad practically writes itself.
It's not difficult to understand what Brown was trying to communicate: He is not a typical candidate and will be the first to acknowledge that. But when people get to know him, Brown seems to be saying, they will warm up to him.

The challenge for Brown is that Democrats are also seeking to define his image. And they are going to use comments like "whatever" to paint him as someone who isn't serious.

"Whatever," it's worth noting, has come up before with Brown. He drew widespread attention when he tweeted "#Bqhatevwr" last year -- a bizarre message that he blamed on pocket dialing. "#Bqhatevwr" would later become the title of a Democratic attack ad. - Washington Post, 3/25/14

While it's debatable about how seriously Brown is taking this campaign, the Koch Brothers, Karl Rove and the GOP are serious about defeating Shaheen.  And Shaheen is taking Brown seriously:

New Hampshire US Senator Jeanne Shaheen is set to launch a radio ad Monday attacking Scott Brown for failing to sign a pledge, similar to one inked during his 2012 campaign in Massachusetts, limiting outside spending in the race, her campaign said.

“Not long ago, Scott Brown said he was ‘really disgusted’ with super PAC ads,” a female announcer says in the spot, referring to political action committees. “Now Scott Brown won’t sign his own pledge to stop them.”

Earlier this month, Brown announced he was exploring a run against Shaheen and both have subsequently launched broadsides against each other — Shaheen knocking Brown for not signing the pact and Brown dinging Shaheen for her support of the Affordable Care Act, tying her to President Obama.

The 60-second spot, which marks a new chapter in the nascent race, notes his support for a pledge to curtail third-party spending in his unsuccessful 2012 US Senate race against Elizabeth Warren. It also attacks him for saying no to a similar pact in his potential run against Shaheen.
